Step 1: Find a Safe Location

If you get a flat tire while driving, find a safe place to stop. Select a flat, stable area away from traffic and turn on your warning lights. Set the parking brake and put the car in park (or gear if you have a manual gearbox).

Step 2: Assess the Damage

Examine the tire to find the hole. If the thing is still embedded, carefully remove it using pliers. Examine the remaining tire for any additional damage or foreign objects.

Step 3: Lift the Car

Lift the car off the ground with the jack, following the manufacturer’s instructions in your vehicle manual. Once the car has been raised, use the lug wrench to remove the lug nuts and the flat tire.

Step 4: Locate the Puncture

Fill a spray bottle halfway with soapy water and spray it on the car tire. Look for the formation of bubbles, since this reveals the site of the tire puncture.

Step 5: Prepare the Puncture Area

Use the tire reamer from the repair kit to clean and enlarge the puncture hole. This improves the patch’s adhesion. Be careful not to overextend the hole, which may jeopardize the tire’s integrity.

Step 6: Apply Rubber Cement

Apply rubber cement from the tire repair kit to the puncture area. This will help the patch adhere securely to the tire. Allow the cement to dry for a few minutes, or until sticky.

Step 7: Apply the Patch

Select a patch from the repair kit, and press it firmly against the puncture. Make sure the patch completely covers the damaged area. The patch should adhere to the tire and form a tight seal.

Step 8: Reinflate the Tire

After using a tire pressure gauge to check the recommended tire pressure for your vehicle, use an air compressor to inflate the tire to the recommended level.

Step 9: Reinstall the Tire

Place the repaired tire back onto the car and hand-tighten the lug nuts onto the wheel bolts. Lower the car using the car jack, then tighten the lug nuts securely in a crisscross pattern with the lug wrench.

Patching a car tire puncture is a DIY skill every driver should have. You can get back on the road fast and safely with the correct tools and a systemic strategy. To avoid future problems, check your tire pressure and inspect your car tire for damage on a regular basis.
