Causes of The Car Vibrating At High Speed

Because of the rotation of the crankshaft, transmission gears, and other moving parts in your engine, it’s typical for your automobile to vibrate somewhat when you’re driving. The moment has come to look into why these slight vibrations start to seem more like shaking.

How to detect vibrations in your automobile

The most frequent causes of severe vibration in an automobile are issues with the wheels, brakes, steering, suspension, axle, or tires. It seems like there are many causes, doesn’t it? Not to worry. We’ll examine each one in turn to determine any potential issues.

First, try to identify the source of the vibrations and the time they began. Are the tremors just audible while the car is accelerating and starting?


Your tyres are likely to be the source of the shaking in your car. These issues consist of:

(a) Tyres out of balance

There’s a significant chance that your tyres are out of balance if you notice that the shaking is mild at low speeds but increases when you go to 90 km/h. Look for flat patches on your tyres to see whether this is the cause of the extreme vibrations. Depending on the extent of the damage, you might only need to get your tires balanced to fix the problem. However, if the damage is too severe, you will have to get new tires.

(b) Underinflated tyres
When you travel at higher speeds, underinflated tyres might cause your automobile to vibrate excessively. It’s a good idea to make sure your air pressure complies with the requirements in your owner’s manual even if you don’t notice any flat spots on your tyres. You risk having a blowout if your tyres are underinflated.

(c) Uneven tyre wear

Numerous road dangers can easily knock tyres out of alignment. Due to this, they start to wear out unevenly, such as via cupping (a wavy surface on the tyre thread) or from having too much wear on one side. This issue can be resolved by looking for damage in your tyres, replacing them, and/or realigning them (depending on the amount of damage on the tyres).

(d) Tyre weaknesses
Your car may vibrate at low speeds (below 30 km/h) if one or more of the following conditions exist: an out-of-round (i.e., deformed) tyre; one in which the tread or internal belts have split from the body of the tyre. These kinds of issues may result from a manufacturing flaw, but they can also be brought on by dangerous road conditions.

(e) Bald or worn-out tyres
Your car will have low traction, limited stopping force, and decreased cornering capability if your tyres have little to no wear. Additionally, you will be sliding around in bad weather. The shaking is another indicator that it’s time to get new tires.

(f) Car rims
Your rims are another potential tyre-related factor. If you drive roughly or encounter big bumps or potholes, your rims may flex and your tire may be damaged.

(g) Tires with little rolling resistance
This kind of tyre, also known as low profile tires, is becoming more and more prevalent on hybrid and electric vehicles (EV) because it lowers drag and resistance, which improves the vehicles’ environmental credentials. They provide less comfort for driving because they don’t absorb as many road imperfections, but they are tougher than most drivers are used to. This suggests that low rolling resistance in your car’s tires may be the cause of the vibrations, but it is best to rule out other explanations first.


Wheels  Vibrations could be brought on by:

(a) Imbalanced wheels
Even if you didn’t damage your tyres when you struck a deep pothole or low curb, there’s still a potential that you did harm your wheels, which could make them imbalanced. If you believe this to be the cause of your car’s vibrations, it is recommended to consult a competent mechanic because this is unfortunately challenging to diagnose on your own.

(b) Damaged or bent wheels
Your wheels may be bent or damaged by deep potholes and other road dangers, which will cause your automobile to vibrate excessively. Use a wheel balance device to thoroughly analyze the issue; it will indicate if the wheel can be repaired or needs to be replaced.

(c) Wheel runout
Any departure from a completely circular rotation as it is spun is monitored using a dial indicator. A new wheel is frequently the simplest solution, depending on the measurements.

(d) Wheel bearings
Your wheel bearings may have worn out or been damaged if you can sense vibrations via the steering wheel. Despite the fact that wheel bearings often last the life of your automobile, this isn’t always the case, particularly if you frequently drive off-road, have a high mileage, or drive aggressively.


Checking your brakes is a smart idea if the vibrations aren’t coming from an issue with your wheels or tyres. Some components to examine are:

(a) Brake discs and rotors
Your automobile will shake when you brake if your brake discs have thickness differences, commonly known as excessive runout or being out of round. When you step on the brake pedal, you can also feel it vibrate. Due to extensive wear and tear, the brake disc might become distorted in this way. In other words, the brake disc has become overheated due to greater and more frequent stopping than it is capable of.

(b) Caliper
The brake calipers may potentially become caught on the brake disc. When this occurs, the steering wheel may vibrate when you travel over 70 km/h, and you may smell burning when you stop.

(c) Drum brakes
Drums used for braking can also be out of round, just as brake discs. When you apply the brakes, you’ll experience additional vibrations and hear a scraping or squealing sound.

The steering system should be checked next. Vibrations could be caused by:

(a) Unfixed parts
Your steering will become less sensitive than it should be when the numerous components begin to wear down over time. In what area do you feel the vibrations the most? When your steering is OK while driving straight but shakes when you turn a corner, it may be a sign that your tie rod ends are worn out. On the other hand, if your steering wheel rattles when you drive straight but not when you turn, your ball joints likely need to be replaced.

(b) Power steering
Another potential explanation for why your steering wheel shakes while you’re turning a corner but not when you’re traveling straight ahead is power steering. Check your power steering for leaks and confirm that your reservoir has enough power steering fluid to see if this is the issue.


It makes sense because the steering system is linked to the suspension system. The following list of causes for the vibrations:

(a) Out of alignment
Your suspension may become out of alignment as a result of running into curbs or potholes. Vibrations that are felt at various speeds are one sign of this.

(b) Unfixed parts
If you find that your car shakes occasionally while you drive at a particular pace but not always, there’s a chance the vibrations are coming from worn suspension parts or bearings. If you encounter a bump in the road, you can experience increased vibrations that last until you come to a complete stop. It is definitely worthwhile to make sure that your suspension system’s parts are all correctly connected.

(c) Worn-out parts
Vibrations at high speeds and when you brake can be brought on by worn parts, such as control arm bushings and ball joints. In this instance, the vibrations are a warning that your suspension system needs to be checked and maintained, with any worn components being replaced.

The axle is the last component of the car to be examined before the engine. The following three elements should be examined to determine the source of the vibrations:

(a) Bent axle
As we’ve seen, hitting a pothole while driving can cause significant, hidden harm to your car. A bent axle is another issue that could arise from a pothole. The more quickly you drive, the more your automobile will shake if your axle is bent.

(c) Damaged driveshaft
In rear-wheel drive cars, a driveshaft rapidly rotates as it distributes engine power to the back axles and wheels (or the front axles and wheels in front-wheel drive vehicles). This can shake violently if it is bent.

(d) Constant velocity (CV) joints that are worn out
When the rubber, accordion-shaped CV joints (boots) that surround the ends of the drive axles tear, grit, dust, and other road grime can enter and harm the joints. This can produce vibrations. A front-wheel drive vehicle will require new drive axles if this occurs.

The engine is the last component of your car to be examined. Numerous components, such as the following, could be the source of the vibrations:

(a) Spark plugs
A petrol automobile’s engine may misfire in one or more cylinders due to worn or dirty spark plugs, which may result in vibrations while the car is idling or moving at a pace. The simplest fix is to change your spark plugs and inspect the associated wiring.

(b) Intake filters for both air and fuel
The air and fuel systems may also be to blame for engine vibrations. Sometimes the issue can be resolved with modest adjustments to the fuel intake system, such as altering the carburetor’s idle or cleaning the fuel intake system.

Check the fuel and air filters as well. As fuel flow is correlated to the amount of air that passes through an air filter, a blocked, dirty, or damaged air filter limits the oxygen supply available for the ignition process, limiting the amount of fuel available. As a result, your engine shakes because there isn’t enough fuel or air in the engine. A clogged fuel filter has a similar effect on your car.

(c) Disconnected or loose hoses
Your car has a number of hoses that carry air-fuel mixtures, radiator coolant, vacuum, etc. If any of them are cracked, damaged, loose, or detached, your engine won’t get the supplies it need to function properly. Your car will start to vibrate, misfire, or stall out as a result of this.

By replacing any damaged hoses and making sure all hose connections are tight, the problem can be quickly fixed.

(d) Faulty motor mounts

In order to keep your engine connected to the vehicle, motor mounts are placed in between the engine and the car’s body. They serve to dampen engine vibrations. While the engine is turned on, your automobile will vibrate if one or more of your motor mounts are damaged, but the vibrations will be far less noticeable when the engine is just idling. The motor mounts must be changed in order to resolve this problem.

(e)Defective timing belt
